Falling in Love with your Hero
by Norah Wilson

When I write a romance, I really need to fall in love with my hero. After all, if I can’t fall for him, why should I expect the reader to?

With Cal Taggart in Every Breath She Takes (previously released as Lauren’s Eyes), I thought I might have hit a wall. I mean, I knew very little about cowboys, and my decision to write about one could not have been more cold-blooded. Frustrated by my inability to sell a book no matter how many contests I won, I decided that since cowboys were reputed to sell, I was darned well going to write a cowboy book.

But a funny thing happened when I embarked on my research – I fell in love with my subject. So much so that I had a hard time stopping the research and starting the writing. And as I wrote, I tried to instill those cowboy traits of strength, responsibility, courage, stoicism – and yes, swagger – into my hero. Did it work? I guess the reader will have to be the judge, but it sure worked for me!

Part of what made me love him so much was his vulnerability under that strength. He truly is a flawed character, and my heroine Lauren Townsend sees that clearly. She goes into their fling with her eyes wide open, neither of them counting on that relationship deepening. Fortunately, the tests and trials they are forced to endure make Cal confront his issues and start dealing.

Which leads me into that other thing about romance – I need to close the book believing that the characters can rise above their emotional baggage to have a solid, believable happy ever after. Again, the reader will have to judge, but I totally believed Lauren and Cal earned their HEA. If you were to ask me to write a vignette of them together five, ten, even fifty years into the future, I could do it. Which gives me an idea for a whole other blog…

The Giveaway:

I will give away a print copy (trade paperback) of Guarding Suzannah, the first book in my Serve and Protect Series, as well as Needing Nita, a slim 15K novelette in the series which also contains chapter samples from the novels.

If the winner prefers an electronic prize, I would be happy to substitute the Serve and Protect Box Set in the format of their choice.

Serve & Protect Series

Blurb for Every Breath She Takes:

Every Breath She TakesVeterinarian Lauren Townsend has good reason for hiding her psychic ability. Not only did her “freakishness” earn her pariah status in the small town where she grew up, it cost her a fiancé and her faith in love. When Lauren foresees a murder—through the killer’s eyes—she traces the victim to a sprawling ranch, never guessing what waits for her…

Cal Taggart’s rugged ranch life doesn’t need any more complications. His stubborn determination cost him his marriage, and now may cost him his livelihood. But then beautiful Lauren enters his corral…with danger close behind. And Cal wants nothing more than to protect her. They can’t deny their intense attraction. Nor do they want to. What begins as a fling with no strings becomes a fight for survival—and for true love.

  1. Shannon F. says:

I loved the interview, it’s always interesting to hear/read what author’s have to say about their work, or what their interests’ are, or even how they were able to write their characters’!
A cowboy hero has so many great qualities… I will always love the idea of their rugged good looks, their cowboy hat, their checkered shirts, those sexy used, snug fitting jeans they put on, and the boots! They’re always so charming and sweet, but rough too… *sighs*
    Keep up the good work!!

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Thank you, Shannon! And that was a lovely word picture of a cowboy you painted. I found myself building it as I read. :)

  2. I loved Needing Nita! This broke girl enters lots of contests because I’m unable to buy many books right now, but I’d love to read more of your work! Thanks for the opportunity!

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Oh, thank you, Candice! I love hearing people’s reactions to Needing Nita. That little free novella (novelette?) has been downloaded over a quarter of a million times! Good luck in the contest!

  3. Norah Wilson says:

Thanks, Elysa! I don’t know about you, but my book-buying has exploded. Between the lower prices of ebooks, one-click buying, and the ease of storage (no one needs to know I bought ten books today because there’s no physical evidence!), my TBR list expands daily.

  4. Gee, thanks Norah – ANOTHER book to be added to my ever growing TBR!!!

I love cowboys and when you throw in a touch of the magical (a psychic) how can I resist?

  5. Cris says:

… and my already epic digital TBR (which boasts over 300 books and I don’t seem to be capable of curtailing my acquisitions) grows even more! As a current expat Canuck, I love me some books set in my home & native land :). Albeit, admittedly, I haven’t been to New Brunswick…

But, yeah, what’s not to like about cowboys? :P

    1. Norah Wilson says:

LOL, Cris. I feel your pain. If I ever lost power for, say, a month in an ice storm, I might be able to make a dent in my TBR pile, as long as my Kindle stayed powered. ,-)

  6. Jackie says:

Cowboys – yum! It’s all that manly energy, and that whole ‘I’ve got this,’ vibe.

    1. Norah Wilson says:

OMG – LOL! That’s the perfect description, the “I’ve got this” vibe. Thanks, Jackie!

  7. Linda says:

Love this and can´t wait for a chance to read for myself, =) thanks for the giveaway and
    Happy Tuesday!

    //Linda

    1. Norah Wilson says:

How kind of you to say, Linda! Good luck in the draw!

  8. Christy Hayes says:

Sounds like a great read, Nora. Who doesn’t love a cowboy?

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Thanks, Christy! I was a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to the cowboys, but I have all the zeal of the converted. :D

  9. Barbara Britton says:

Hi Norah and Mia. Norah, your excerpt has enticed me. I like cowboys from Matt Dillon to the Bonanza and Barkley boys.
I even had a crush on Bruce Boxleitner in How The West Was Won.
Looking forward to reading this one.

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Oh, Bruce Boxleitner is adorable! Thanks for putting that thought in my head, Barbara! And thanks for your kind comments about the excerpt. :)

  10. Na S. says:

I’ve found myself reading a lot of cowboy stories lately. I like that they seem so loyal and hardworking. I can easily see them in real life.

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Good points, Na S. I’m an eastern urban-dweller, so they were – and still are – pretty exotic to me.

  11. Patty C says:

What’s not to love about a rugged, muscular, honest to goodness cowboy? I’ll take all of the above! Norah, the series looks great as does Every Breath She Takes.
Mia I loved Touch of a Thief! Must read if you have not yet!

    1. Norah Wilson says:

      Precisely, Patty! ,-)
And thank you so much for the kind words about EBST and about the Serve & Protect Series.

  12. Bonnie Vanak says:

Norah, your heroes always rock! You write very sexy, hot men! I loved Lauren’s Eyes!

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Oh, wow, thank you, Bonnie! Another high compliment from a writer I’ve so long admired. Bonnie could teach a master class on making your conflict real and seemingly insurmountable. Maybe that’s why they evoke so much emotion when I read them.

  13. I’m a huge Norah Wilson fan. I always read her books and they never let you down. Will have to read Mia’s books too. It’s nice to find new authors.

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Aww, thank you, Lina! You’ll love Mia’s books. Mia is also the gal who does the Red Pencil Thursday blogs I’ve long been a fan of. She helps authors by giving them critical feedback on the writing samples they submit. Of course, it helps everyone who reads the blog as much as it does the writer in question.

  14. Deborah says:

I can’t wait to read about Cal and Lauren – I discovered cowboys late in life and there is definitely something about them! What I’m most looking forward to is another great Norah read – love your books Norah! Thanks for hosting, Mia, now to check out your books *grin*

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Thanks, Deborah! Glad I’m not the only “late bloomer” in regard to coming to appreciate cowboys. ,-)

  15. Ana E Ross says:

Wow, Nora, what a splendid blog. I fall in love with my heroes at first sight. I love your idea of a vignette of your H@H. Exciting. Congrats!

    1. Norah Wilson says:

It’s a trip, isn’t it, Ana? And the trick is to make everyone else fall in love with him too.

  16. Norah Wilson says:

Thank you, Carol! I’ll return the compliment about your heroes. I don’t know too many authors who write male POV as well as you do, and you know that turns me to putty. :)

  17. Carol Schede says:

You are 100% spot on with this interview, Norah. I do indeed fall in love with all of my heroes — and with yours too! When can we expect another book and another yummy hero?

  18. Pamela Clare says:

Great post! I personally loved this book. I found it all the more interesting because it was set in Canada. Congrats, Norah, on the books release! :-)

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Thank you, Pamela! That means a lot coming from you. Folks, Pamela is the author of the utterly addictive I-Team sexy romantic suspense series, as well as gritty, wonderful Colonial historicals.

    2. Mia Marlowe says:

O, Canada! Lovely country, lovely people. Honestly has anyone ever met a mean, snarky Canadian?

  19. Belinda says:

Book sounds delicious and hot. Thanks for contest.

    1. Norah Wilson says:

“delicious and hot”. Yes. This. At least, that’s what I was trying for. :) Thanks, Belinda!

  20. leann says:

Good Afternoon Ms. Norah & Ms. Mia. Both of you are new authors for me. I love that most cowboys are hard working, fun lovin’ & real!! They seem to never give-up until the job is done. I would love to win this giveaway. Thanks for the interview & giveaway. Leann leamei1981@yahoo.com

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Oh, yeah, Leanne! Love the get-it-done attitude. Good luck in the draw!

  21. May says:

Maybe it’s the hat or the hard-working attitude or the honour system… :)

    Both are great books

    1. Norah Wilson says:

      More great cowboy qualities, May!

  22. Nynke says:

I’m with Eli – this sounds good! :)

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Thanks, Nynke! That warms my heart to hear!

  23. Norah Wilson says:

Thanks, Eli! That big smile makes my day.

  24. eli yanti says:

sounds a great book, i’m going to check it :)

  25. Caroline says:

Yay, Norah! Yay, Mia! Great interview. The book sounds exciting. I’m looking forward to some reading time…
    Hugs,
    ~C

    1. Norah Wilson says:

Thanks so much, Caroline! Know what you mean about the reading time. I’m forcing myself to carve out time. Having my eReader read to me when I’m walking the dog or driving is my latest way to try to squeeze more reading into my day.

      1. Caroline says:

I never thought about that. Thanks! I have several books going and that would help! Hugs! :)

  26. julie says:

i love reading westerns, cowboys are a truely alpha lot, with their quiet confidience and unique abilities they make a woman feel so special

    1. Norah Wilson says:

You said that so much better than I did, Julie!

  27. Robin in NC says:

What’s not to love about a cowboy hero?!?!? They’re rugged & hardworking yet know how to treat a lady right! Besides that, they’re just too darn sexy for words! ;-) Thanks Norah & Mia!!!

    1. Mia says:

Having lived in some western states, I can attest to the gentlemanly quality of real cowboys. They do value women!

    2. Norah Wilson says:

Exactly, Robin! What’s not to love?
And Mia, just how many states have you lived in? (I’ve lived my home province my entire life!)

  28. What a great interview! ;o) I’m looking forward to reading this one…my TBR list just keeps getting longer and longer! ;o) Thanks for sharing.

    Suzan Tisdale

    1. Mia says:

I’ve got a stack of TBRs on my bedside table that’s about big enough to need its own zipcode!

    2. Norah Wilson says:

      Thanks, Suzan! I’m flattered. :)
I do most of my book-buying on my Kindle now, but I still have a lot of print books I haven’t read yet, and hundreds upon hundreds of Kindle titles. I buy way more books now than I ever did!
