Defiant by Kris Kennedy

Kris KennedyWhen I first started writing, I didn’t write stories set exclusively in Regency England. The Dark Ages called to me and I followed the summons to write Maidensong, my viking romance. My spotlight author this hour isn’t afraid to buck the trend either. I’m so excited to introduce you to Kris Kennedy and her fabulous medievals.

Here’s what Kris says about writing:

I love writing. I can feel my fingers actually move towards the keyboard. I love everything about it, except the times when I’m dying inside because I can’t make it work. And later, when it passes, I love even that, for its raw, despairing intensity. I love wondering how to put in ‘cliffhangers’ and red herrings into my stories. I love trying to figure out whose point of view a scene should be in. I love developing tortured characters. Poor things, to be stuck in my psyche. :-) I love figuring out who has the most to lose, then making them lose it.

I love punctuation.

I know, it’s sick.

Defiant by Kris Kennedy

DefiantEngland, 1215, the eve of Magna Carta

Jamie Lost is the king’s most renowned commander, an audacious knight ordered to kidnap an exiled priest before rebel forces close in. The mission is simple–until he comes up against a mysterious woman on a mission, a thief who will first steal his quarry and then his heart.

Eva is also seeking Father Peter, but she intends to protect him from a secret that endangers his life, even if it costs her own. She is well aware danger lies everywhere, especially in the knight showing too much interest in her activities. But deep inside, Eva knows the danger lies not in Jamie, but in her, in the desire he awakens in her body and her heart.

When a mysterious band of armed mercenaries upends both their plans and abducts the priest, Jamie and Eva must form an uneasy alliance, and as civil war unfolds around them, they embark on an epic journey that betrays the truth about their identities, their unexpected loyalties, and the dangerous attraction that could seal their fates forever.

This hour, I’ll also be choosing a reader to receive an ebook of my Maidensong for winner’s choice of Kindle or Nook. Like Kris’s Defiant, Maidensong is an epic journey. Bjorn is oath-bound to deliver the woman he loves to another man’s arms. He and Rika must travel down the wild rivers of Europe to the Byzantine capital where they learn to love is to risk all.

I’m an avid student of the medieval period, and I’ve been frustrated by the dearth of good medieval novels out there. Going to have to check this one out!

    1. Kris says:

Yes! I’m right there with you. I’m a lay student of the era, and am simply in love with the times, but it’s hard to find great medieval-set romantic fiction. And once you do find an author you love, who’s writing medievals, well, they can only write so fast, so it can be a long wait for more. :)

Thanks for coming by, Sharon, and if you pick up DEFIANT (or any of the others) or Mia’s Viking-era story, I hope you love!

  2. Kris,I love that you love punctuation. And thanks for keeping English-set medievals going. Love’em and try to write them myself. I do have Defiant on my shelf. Way to go :)

    1. Kris says:

Aww, Barbara, thanks so much for cheering on me and medievals. :) Medievals definitely need a cheering section, because they’re often not a huge seller, and it’s hard for NY publishers to keep putting them out.

You keep on writing, and you’ll get there!
If you’re a member of RWA w/ PRO status, and are going to the RWA conference this year, I’m putting a critique up for the raffle they’re doing, if that’s of any interest. :)

      Thanks for saying, Hi, Barbara!

  3. Cate S says:

I haven’t read a Medieval in a long time.. I love the period [even if I don’t want to go and experience the real life of not much to read and no where to go to read in a real tub of hot water either…] Great interview!! thanks to Mia for getting you to stop by!

    1. Kris says:

LOL. You and me both. I love the drama and grit and intensity of the middle ages, but I’m not really looking to *go* there. :)
If you give DEFIANT (or any of my or Mia’s medievals) a try, I hope you love them all, and they transport you back to the glamor and excitement of the age of chivalry, without all the annoyances like no running water and no electric razors. ;)

  4. Na S. says:

It’s wonderful that you are doing what you love. I love reading. Defiant sounds like an action-packed and exciting read.

    1. Kris says:

      Na S~
Thank-you! I sure tried to make it action-packed, so readers would be tugged along, scene to scene, wanting to see what was going t happen next. If you read the story, I hope you love!

  5. Diane Sallans says:

I Love Medieval stories! There’s just something about that time period that draws me in.

    1. Kris says:

Could it be the guys with swords who know how to use them? ;)
Thanks for coming by! If you read DEFIANT, I hope you love.

  6. Kris says:

I was *just* talking about that aspect of medievals today! The danger, the wild, on-the-edge nature of almost every aspect. It was all so elemental, for good and for ill. But in stories, you can focus more on the exciting parts. :) If you read Defiant, I hope you love it!

  7. Kris says:

Yay! I’m so glad you’re willing to give Defiant a try, even though it’s not the usual fare. I completely understand not reading many medievals but if you give it a try, I hope you love!

  8. Kris says:

Oohh, maybe I can lure you back into the medieval fold. :) There’s so few medievals out there, I think it’s hard for a reader to stay connected to the subgenre. If you read Defiant, I hope it relights some old fires. :)

  9. Kris says:

Thank-you for stopping by. If you’re a fan of medievals, I hope Defiant feeds that medieval love and makes you very happy. :)

  10. Kris says:

Hi ladies! So, so sorry for the delay in my replies. I thought my problem was Twitter, but now I’m thinking it’s my internet connection.

Betty, can I say how much I love your enthusiasm? Thanks for saying hi, and I’m so glad to find another enthusiastic medieval lover. :)

  11. StacieD says:

I love medieval romances because of the constant danger that surrounds the couple. Life was hard and there was a lawlessness. I like romances set in the Old West for the same reason.

  12. This books looks really good. I’ll be honest, I haven’t read too many medieval romances before but this one looks good. Definitely going to add it to my wish list.

  13. Andrea says:

I haven’t read a medieval romance in years. I need to add this to my to read list.

  14. Diane P. Diamond says:

I do love to read a Medieval romance, especially one filled with danger and intrigue. I haven’t read anything by Kris, so she’s a new to me Author.
